When it comes to ways to get yourself to poop instantly, you have quite a few options. Certain vegetables and fruit, like beets and prunes, are synonymous with getting things moving, as are specific yoga poses and sitting positions. There’s also a whole list of beverages that can make you poop fast, like fruit juices, coffee, and tea — all of which you’ve probably heard about at some point. But there’s another juice, one that might even surprise you, that can be your best friend when you need to poop fast: sugarcane juice.

“Sugarcane juice is a natural source of dietary fiber, which we know and recognize in the scientific community for its properties and benefits to digestive and cardiovascular health,” Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at Top Nutrition Coaching, Lena Bakovic, exclusively told Health Digest. “Fiber intake can produce laxative-like properties, which, when combined with sufficient water intake, may aid/relieve symptoms of constipation.”

That’s right: all this time you could have been pouring yourself a glass of sugarcane juice to combat constipation. However, after it’s been processed from cane into juice, it’s a syrupy texture that not everyone is going to enjoy drinking. So, cutting that thickness with water or a fruit juice, ideally one that shares the same mission, is the best way to consume it.

Other benefits of sugarcane juice

While the benefits of sugarcane juice might be new to people in the West, in Eastern countries, it is part of a regular healthy diet. In India, sugarcane juice is called “Ganne Ka” and is the first thing to be consumed on an empty stomach in the morning because of its positive impact on digestive health, per Times of India. It’s also used to hydrate, detoxify, and manage weight, and is supposedly great for the skin too.

“Besides the fiber content, sugarcane juice does contain some antioxidants, namely flavonoids,” said Bakovic. “Antioxidants, which are present in many plant-based foods, contribute in fighting off free radical damage, which, when present in excess, contributes to oxidative stress and eventually cancer and other chronic diseases.” It’s also a good source of magnesium and potassium, both of which are necessary for muscle and nerve function, as well as heart health. It contains a surprising amount of calcium, which is essential for strong bones and teeth.

If the benefits of ingesting sugarcane juice weren’t enough, it can also be applied topically to wounds. According to a 2020 study published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, sugarcane can reduce inflammation and promote cell growth.

Considerations to take when choosing sugarcane juice to relieve constipation

As much as sugarcane might be a delicious option in managing constipation, its sugar content needs to be seriously considered. A 100-gram serving (a little less than a cup) of sugarcane syrup, which is what it is before you cut it with water or another juice, contains 73.2 grams of sugar.

“[Sugarcane juice] should most definitely be consumed in moderation, particularly for individuals who may be living with diabetes,” said Bakovic, adding that such an amount could significantly increase blood sugar levels — something that someone who’s watching their sugar absolutely doesn’t want. “Furthermore, the excess sugar content is a source of additional calories, which over a period of time can contribute to weight gain if consumed regularly,” said Bakovic.

In other words, like with any food — even those that have multiple health benefits — moderation is key. If you find yourself needing to poop fast, alternate the ways you make that happen. For example, if the last few times you relieved your constipation with vegetables, then treat yourself with a cup of sugarcane juice. If you find that you’re relying on sugarcane too much for this particular situation, then break the habit and mix things up with whole fruit and veggies instead. Although constipation can be very uncomfortable, throwing your sugar levels and calorie intake into overdrive is just going to create its own set of health-related issues.
